History
In 1980, Inkster School parents identified a growing need for before and after school child care. Through the organization of these parents, Inkster Community Child Care Inc. (I.C.C.C.I.) became a formal, non-profit, funded corporation run by a parent Board of Directors in April of 1981.
Since its inception, I.C.C.C.I. has expanded its numbers and program. In 1981, I.C.C.C.I. was licensed as a 45 space before and after school and lunch program. We had only six children using the before and after school program, with 45 children in at noon. In 1986, the centre was granted an additional 16 spaces, bringing the total to 71 licensed spaces for children aged two to twelve years.
In 1990, the centre expanded again with the start of its first preschool program which accommodated six children, five years of age. We had no permanent space to call our own and it was through the hard work and dedication of the staff that allowed the program to flourish. The preschool program operated out of Room 4 and a completely portable school-age program ran out of the gymnasium. Staff had to set up and take down the program in the gym six times per day!
The next expansion came in 1994 when I.C.C.C.I. renovated the boys’ and girls’ shower rooms. Renovations began in the summer of ’94 and were completed in time for the revamped program’s opening in September. Once we were in our own area, the centre began staying open year-round. We no longer closed for Spring and Christmas breaks or for the summer holidays.
The final expansion to date came in April, 2000 when I.C.C.C.I. once again expanded its preschool program. We are happy to say we are now able to accommodate children aged two to five, increasing the enrolment to 26 preschool children along with 45 school-age children.
Inkster Community Child Care Inc. is proud of its past accomplishments and looks forward to serving the community with continued success in the future.
